Sheila's Schnauzies Miniature Schnauzer Rescue

When I founded Sheila's Schnauzies Miniature Schnauzer Rescue back in 1998, my commitment was to work for dogs - not people. That meant I would have to make some difficult decisions over the years, but it also helped me to keep my focus correct. Miniature Schnauzers are simply the love of my life and I will do just about anything to help them!

Right now we have three dogs here. They are my personal pet, 11 year old Scrappy Jack; along with rescues SueSue, 6; and Ladybug, 4.

Pictured here with me are two of my rescue girls, Ladybug at left, and SueSue. Ladybug came into my rescue at 13 months of age from central Kansas when her owners lost their home due to the economy. SueSue came into my rescue in 2007 as a 4-month old puppy! Her owner allowed their two year old to play unsupervised with Susie, pulling her ears and otherwise tormenting her, and Susie nipped at her. Go figure! In the entire time I've had her with me, she has never bitten anyone else. But she is un-placeable because she carries the brand of "biter." Dogs like Sue have to have somewhere to go, and that's where I've always come in. I take the un-placeables, the misfits, the behavior problems, the insurmountable medical challenges, the leg-lifters... you name it.

The dog, once it is accepted here, stays until I find the perfect forever home for him or her. If that's days or weeks, great! If it's years, fine. One dog stayed with me for six years and then found a great home. Several others have lived out their lives here with me.

Since I have undergone several major surgeries including replacing both hips and a knee, and more to come, I have had to stop taking dogs into my own home. I have been busy the last few months recruiting foster volunteers who take on the job of daily care of the dogs. This arrangement is working beautifully! I'm still able to do the work I love and the dogs are still getting the expert help they need.

The most expensive part of dog rescue work is veterinary care. That's where we ask for support from donors! Some people are called to work directly with the animals, like me. Scrappy Jack had 13 teeth removed the day before Thanksgiving and came down with a very serious cellulitis infection along with a respiratory infection. So far he is not responding well to the treatment. He has incurred over $1000 in vet bills thus far with more treatment to come. Your In-Depth On The Scene Schnauzer Reporter!

Hi, I'm Ladybug and I'm the littlest one of Sheila's furkids. I'm the one in the pink dress in the picture at the top! I live in the Miniature Schnauzer rescue called Sheila's Schnauzies in Omaha, Nebraska. Our nonprofit rescue has been going on since 1998 but none of us has been here that long... Well, Scrappy Jack has, I guess. He was Mom's kid before she started rescuing. So SJ is "The Boss" around here. I came here when I was just 13 months old after my old parents lost their home to the economy. That's when I went into rescue, then I eventually ended up here.

There are three of us living here right now: me, now 4; SueSue who is 7, and of course Scrappy, 11. This fall, we rescued little Shyla, an 8 lb. black Miniature Schnauzer who was picked up by a large bird in eastern Iowa and dropped, leaving claw holes in both her sides! She is all healed up and (now named Jozie) is doing great at her new forever home!

No sooner than we had placed Shyla, another very unexpected rescue came in! Mom had taken me to my vet appointment and was standing there waiting as another lady holding a tiny, very sick puppy was yelling at the staff. She was angry because they had diagnosed her pup with Parvovirus and he needed urgent hospitalization to survive. It ended up that mom talked the lady into surrendering the puppy to her rather than dumping him at the unstaffed local city rescue drop off kennels as she stated she intended to do. So, mom put little 14 week old Cocoa Bear in the hospital right then and there. He made a remarkable recovery and ended up in a marvelous forever home down in Kansas City after spending several weeks recuperating here with us.

Shortly thereafter, we rescued a tiny girl, a Carnauzer (Cairn Terrier/Schnauzer Mix) in October. She was literally scheduled to be put to death at an eastern Iowa kill shelter when we found out about her and got her pulled out just in time with less than an hour to spare! Her new name is Izzy and after spending some time with us, she found an amazing new forever home with a retired schoolteacher who has two Schnauzers including one of our former rescues, Schultzie. She is now the official "Queen of the Manor" there and is much adored!

Sheila's Schnauzies rescues, rehabilitates and places Miniature Schnauzers for adoption, and provides sanctuary to dogs who are un-placeable.
