So many choices

Lake Tahoe provides so many types of lodging and at such a wide range of prices that one would like a way to help pick the best choice in where to stay. This article tries to segment the choices by location in the Lake Tahoe vicinity or by interest area so one can begin to narrow down to a manageable number of options.

Lake Tahoe in Winter

Truckee is the nearest large town located by the most major road across the area, Interstate 80. Truckee started life as a law-less shanty town to support the diversion needs of the construction workers of the first transcontinental railroad. Truckee refused to be tamed for a hundred years, even the saloons continued to operate during prohibition. Truckee kept its wild-west ambience until the 1960 Olympic Games in nearby Squaw Valley.

Truckee offers a number of choices of lodgings and might be the first selection for vacationers just passing through the area and planning to visit a few highlights of the lake in a day or two, as Truckee is just a few miles north of Lake Tahoe.

Truckee retains much of its Wild West flavor

Lake Tahoe's North Shore offers small communities near the lake and is more often the best choice for families and those seeking to get close to nature. Many water sport options are available including swimming and boating. Hiking trails can be found in the area.

The North Shore also has some of the area's finest ski resorts including the always impressive and challenging Squaw Valley Ski Resort mentioned above, site of the 1960 Olympic Games. Golf and horse riding are also to be found for those interested in outdoor pastimes.

Tahoe City, Carnelian Bay and Kings Beach are the major communities on the California side of the North Shore. Crossing over to the State of Nevada brings one to the Incline Village area where more skiing is available along with water sports activities and other outdoor activities.

Lake Tahoe's South Shore provides lots of lodging possibilities as well as the most excitement and most population. The town of South Lake Tahoe, on the California side of the South Shore, is the largest city on the lake.

West of South Lake Tahoe is Emerald Bay, a stunningly beautiful inlet off the lake. The bay is a park with hiking and boating possibilities. East of South Lake Tahoe you cross the state line and will find an assortment of Las Vegas style gaming casinos. Among the choices are the Mirabelle, Harrah's, Harvey's Resort and the MontBleu. Prices cover a wide range and the casinos also offer stage shows and a range of restaurant choices as well as all the popular gambling selections.

Lake Tahoe's Ski Resorts are spread over a broad area so they have their own classification here, only because they all are designed to cater to one class of vacationers. That group is the multitudes of hard-core and wanna-be skiers who converge on the slopes each winter to enjoy some of the best downhill and cross-country skiing to be found anywhere.

Tahoe's ski resorts also offer the full selection of prices and quality levels for accommodations. Read the article about each of the resorts to locate the ones that seem most appropriate for your needs.

Morning Commute to the Slopes at Heavenly Ski Resort

Lake Tahoe gives such a high return for your holiday budget that I doubt you will be displeased with your choices. However, I suggest you keep studying all the available articles to be sure you are picking the perfect place for your needs and interests.

Thank you Menlo Prof.  I am considering Lake Tahoe for a summer fishing trip.  This late in the year, there may be few choices for lodging.  What areas do you recommend on the NV side of the lake? I am looking for a very quiet area.   Great hub!
