One of the best ways to get a feel for an area is to check out the local media. Little Rock newspapers have their fingers on the collective pulse of the city. Politics, crime, education, people-- it's all right at your ink-blackened fingertips.

Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette is the largest daily newspaper in the central Arkansas area. The focus is primarily on news and events in and around Little Rock, but national news takes priority on the front page. On Thursdays and Sundays, the Dem-Gaz issues zoned editions with coverage focused on the outlying areas. Fridays feature an entertainment insert with movie reviews and restaurant recommendations. Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Paul Greenberg is a frequent contributor to the editorial page.

Sync

Sync is a weekly entertainment newspaper published by the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. It is a new entry in the central Arkansas newspaper community, with the first issue hitting stands early this summer. It is positioned to compete with the more liberal Arkansas Times, but it has more emphasis on features and entertainment.

Arkansas Times

If the Democrat-Gazette is the Grand Old Lady of Arkansas Journalism, the Arkansas Times is the brash upstart. Published weekly, the Arkansas Times delves deeply into issues that affect Arkansans, from political corruption to crime rates. They have led the Arkansas media with in-depth coverage of the West Memphis Three case. The Arkansas Times web site has expanded the reach and scope of the weekly. Max Brantley updates the Arkansas Blog throughout the day. His blog frequently scoops more traditional news outlets. The Arkansas Times is free and is available at many places throughout central Arkansas.

El Latino

Central Arkansas' fast growing Hispanic population is served by the weekly El Latino. El Latino covers Hispanic-owned businesses, prominent Hispanics in the area and issues such as bilingual education and finding employment. Like its sister publication the Arkansas Times, El Latino is distributed free of charge throughout the area. A new web page makes the content available to the Hispanic population statewide.

Smaller Weeklies

There are several smaller weeklies that cover the suburbs and bedroom communities surrounding Little Rock, The Maumelle Monitor, the North Little Rock Times and The Benton Courier are all small news papers that focus on growth, expansion and education in their respective towns. The city of Conway, about 30 miles north of Little Rock, has the daily Log Cabin Democrat, which consistently wins awards in the Mid-Sized Daily category.
