SEO And HubScore Tips for Hubpages Writers
Some easy steps to writing and publishing a SEO and Hub Score friendly HubPage.
1. Click Create a Hub
2. Enter The Subject
The title should directly relate to your HubPage and it’s content. Be sure and include at least one of your main keywords in the title. Make it catching and enticing – you want people to want to read your HubPage. If relevant you can always alter the url “web address” for your page so that is optimized for your main keywords. Delete the gumph and words that are not required. If you managed to come up with a catchy title that has your main keyword string and a matching url address, then this is about as good as it gets.
At times the title you want to use or the url address will be taken already. This means someone has already published a hub with the exact same title/url address. Don’t worry about that, simply use it as an opportunity to incorporate more keywords or delete unnecessary ones from the address. Take time to review what the other author had to contribute on the subject and see how you can improve on it.
3. Enter Tags
Tags is just another term for keywords. While opinion’s differs on this one I will explain both options. Either have no more than 5 keywords and OPTIMIZE for these words only....or hedge your bets so to speak and use at least 15 keywords, including at least a couple of common misspellings. I am not the only one who can’t spell you know! I tend to go with the latter.
4. Click Create
5. Now Add Capsules
6. Make Sure The First Capsule Is Text
If your aim is adsense earnings, don’t have a photo at the top aligned with your first text capsule. Allow this space to be open for an adsense image ad. Top placement of an ad always gives the best results and the same is true of adsense.
7. Photo or Image
Google image searches can generate traffic to your HubPage. Be sure to hide keywords within your image by giving it a name associated with your hub. Re-name and tag images on your computer before uploading them to your page. Eg if your main keyword is ‘vintage car’ – name your image vintage_car.jpg or something similar. Again it comes down to how the search engines evaluate your page and read the information within. Search engines are not smart and just process the data as it’s given on the page, so use the opportunity to ad behind the scenes optimization to your HubPage.
8. Text
Write quality original content that the search engines will see as unique. Write to your style but mix up HubPage with keyword rich content. If you are writing to a plan and on a particular topic this tends to just come naturally. However you can always check the keyword density of your page with this tool and review, tweak and optimize accordingly....
http://www.webconfs.com/keyword-density-checker.php
Unfortunately the page needs to be published first before it can be checked by this tool.
If you pre-write your hub in word and use the 'find' function and search within the 'main document' you can check for the number of main keywords and compare it to the total number of words as a whole to gauge your hub keyword density. To find the total number of words in your hub, go to review, then click on word count. The formula is
total words / # of times keyword is represented = %
Aim for a density of around 2% but don't let that set the tone for your writing. It's a guide for what search engines like to read NOT people!
9. Video
If you can locate a video that represents your page well from a reader perspective and is search engine friendly - use it. Confirm that the video is optimized for your main keywords first by viewing the source file.
Instructions for Firefox Browser
Select the menu option "view"
Scroll down to "page source" and click that option
A seperate window will open up showing you the HTML coding for that entire page.
Instructions for IE
Select the menu option "view"
Scroll down to "source" and click that option
A seperate window will open up showing you the HTML coding for that entire page. Do a search for "keywords" and review the words the creator used to tag the video.
If you are using another browser program the steps will be fairly similar, and there were just too many options to list them all on this Hubpage.
Obviously this option is only good for those who know how to read HTML. You need not be an expert at coding, so if you understand the basics - hyperlinks. image insert hyperlinks etc, you should be able to give this a go.
10. Text
11. Video Or Image
Include another video or image.
12. Links. Enter Recommended Links
It should be related to your subject or product. Write your own description for each link. Write 30-50 words minimun and include keywords as you can.
13. Add Comments in the end
14. You can add Amazon capsule with products related to your product, service or business
15. Done
Do not publish your hub until you make sure it is spell checked and you are 100% happy. I would recommend leaving it unpublished until you know it is ready to place live on the internet. While you can always edit and unpublish a hubpage at any time, it's best to get it right the first time.
Here are some more guidelines for a successful hub that will get into the search engines:
- Use your own words and content - search engines love unique content. Fresh content will ensure more search engine listings and traffic. A hub should have at least 1000 words but 1500 is even better.
- Search Engines rate videos highly and if you HubPage links to video's that are already on the search engine listings, the engines give your page a higher value. Try and include at least one video, and a maximum of three. (Use YouTube or Google for the best results)
- Include at least 3 and preferably 5 images. Don't forget that they must be non copywrited / royalty free in order to include them on your HubPage. Not ony do images make your page more attractive to read, but search engines index and search the images on your page. Images are seen as additional data to the text you've written and add value to the overall way a search engine reads, ranks and lists your Hub.
- Try and use outgoing links to related resources. Try and include 10 links to other sources like articles, forums, websites. Always write your own 30-50 word description. This avoids engines penalising your site for duplicate content. The standard description for the link is already indexed - so keep your Hub 100% original by writing your own description.
- Include news capsules and RSS feeds and eBay Capsule if it relates to your page.
- I always try and use at least 15 tags or keywords. Use relevant words that relate and are included in your Hub. Refer back to my advice on keyword research.
- Even though Hubpages takes care of this for you, use at most 150 word description of your summary text. Include your main keywords as this description is what will appear next to your hubpage listing on the search engines. Keywords, keywords, keywords - this is the key.
Additional rules:
- The content must not be copied from any other source, even if you have the rights to copy from that source. It must be 100% original, and not copied
- You should include majority links in a Links Capsule, and the links should not be adult, gambling related or to affiliate site.
- Please separate your text into sections so that it is easy to read.
- Use dot points and numbers points to define your lists. Basically you are trying to encourage an enjoyable read in an easy to follow format.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
How Text Formatting Effects HubPage Search Engine Optimization
Make the most of the text formatting options. Search engines use header tags to help sort and read the date on your page. What do I mean by this? When you type text in your text capsules you can choose from the drop down box at the top menu bar...is the text paragraph, heading 1, heading 2....3, 4 or pre formatted. As you make new sub headings within each capsule highlight the headings and format then with a heading setting.
So why does this formula work? It is all based on Google's algorithm.
Again make sure it is organic and real content. It must be a well-informed hubpage.
That should help boost your quality.
HubPages A Writers Community - My Soap Box Moment!
Ok here's the drill - Hubpages is for writers and people who want to publish online on a variety of topics. As the slogan goes...publish your passion.
HubPages is a community and as much a social site with the forum and comment function - so respect that. This is not a place to write promotional articles about your product or business opportunity. By all means write an honest, no hype review ... freedom of speech and all - but stick to writing an edoursement not a staging campaign.
Hubpages is not intended for direct internet marketing.
Write as though you are talking to your friend in the coffee shop - take of the marketing and advertising hat and set to work. Use your marketing skills to promote your hubs and not your biz op. I find I write best if I sit down on days where I am not doing advertising campaigns - full stop. It clears my mind from marketing/advertising and helps to improve my writing style. I am able to write from a different place and share personal feelings that may not be so obvious in business writings.
This is just my opinion and I am sure there are differing ones on this particular topic so I will leave it at that.
Another very useful Hub, Shaye. Thanks so much for all the excellent information.
I was especially interested in what you had to say about renaming image files to include keywords. I had been puzzled by the number of page views that originate from images.google.com...how are surfers finding my Hubs? Then it occurred to me that when I download an image from another source to my hard drive, I usually rename it so I can associate it with the Hub that's going to contain it (I do all of my writing outside of Hub capsules, and move all text and images into Hub capsules only when I'm ready to publish). I will be paying more attention to just this kind of keyword optimizing from now on!
Shaye -
Shaye,
This is a wonderful hub that includes very valuable infomation on how to write a Hubpage. As I was reading it I was thinking to myself, "Dang, why didn't I know this when I first started several months ago!" lol You have taken several months of experience by "hard knocks" for some and made it into a wonderful Hubpages guide.
Thumbs up all the way!
Super advice! I found this on Digg - so glad to see that your great work is being spread to others. :-) Steph
I've written alot of how to hub, how to utilize the traffic "tunneling" features of hubpages and how to optomize your page hubs and this one says it better than all of mine.
Mine are long, winded and sure chalked with more theory but this hub really impressed me because it gets right to the point and has valuable information, even use of tags and keywords- Simply brilliantely written!
I did not realize the naming of the picture was important so I actually learned something here THANK YOU!
Theirs more traffic plubmbing on hubpages than people realize so linking to other hubs, making fans (friends) and accumulating fans, leaving comments on other hubs consistently are all ways to drive MORE traffic to your hubs as well.
I simply have to see what else you wrote :)
thanks again for a great well built (and opomized) hub.
very thorough . me like . me impressed . me do .
thanx !
definetely a hub, with good solid content,
love it
yours J.T
Wow...great info. I learned a lot - and just became your fan. Thanks! ;)
Great roundup of ideas. I have learned a lot of these by trial and error-- mostly error, but you have given me a lot of new things to consider. Thanks!
@ Thanks Sally's Trove! Yes, it's funny how these things all work and it's pretty practical when you think about it. While I have not had alot of image traffic yet - only 8 hits in fact, but it's automatic passive traffic that is sent to your page simply by piecing it together right before publishing....that's always good in my book. A little bit of effort that gives long term results.
@ LdsNana-Ask wow, thanks for your kind words and the thumbs up. How's your hearing after to coldplay concert? ... FUN?
@ In The Doghouse - Thanks for your comment I do value your opinion - you guys helped me see how Hubpages can be such a supportive community ... not to mention fun. I have learnt from all the writers here if they know it or not....your experiences helped me observe the ins and outs better : )
@ Steph - I get a kick out of hearing that...must be the wanna be celebrity in me - kidding lol
@ Jerrico Usher - I'm glad I could help filter out some of the gumph and get to the real issues.I realise now I should have put in a section on how hubpages are inherently search engine friendly anyways...the programmers here must be fantastic as my hubs are always listed in google in under 4 hours - once it was listed in under 10 minutes (must have published just before a crawl)"Theirs more traffic plubmbing on hubpages than people realize so linking to other hubs, making fans (friends) and accumulating fans, leaving comments on other hubs consistently are all ways to drive MORE traffic to your hubs as well" - I 100% agree this is spot on : ) more than 1/2 my traffic comes from hubpages.com
@ grumpyjacksa - me laugh :c) tnks for stopping by.
@ J.T - I'm glad you loved it and too the time to share your feedback.
@ Pam Pounds Thanks so much for leaving a positive comment and becoming a fan. Feel free to post any questions if there's anything I didn't explain enough
@ Rochelle Frank - I love trial and error! This can be a great way to learn cause once you do it wrong you sure remember never to do it that way again - lol. Thanks for commenting, let me know if it helps for your future hubs.
Wow! What a job! Very well done!
I agree, while I know everything you stated, I don't apply myself since sometimes, I think it's too much :)
Keep up the great work!
Dominique.
Thanks very much Dominique. Me too....the hubpage needs to be enjoyable to write and read so at the end of the day that's whats most important. Just use what comes easily and naturally. If nothing else I just do my keyword research, check my word count and include images.
Shaye
Thanks so much Shaye. It helps to have a rough step by step process that someone else uses, even if you adjust it to what works for you. Keep turning out these very helpful hubs. I know I need to hear what you have to say. I've been making all kinds of mistakes but that's just part of learning.
Hey Babbyii, I like the way you think! Your right, making mistakes is an essential part of learning. I am happy I've been able to help so many people, thanks for taking the time to comment.
Great glycodoc your welcome - use it as a guide not a template...use what works for you....
Excellent content in an easy-to-read. The only thing I would add under "Text" is to be sure that grammar, spelling, and punctuation are correct before publishing a hub. Thanks for the useful information.
Thanks so much Lynn....did mean to put that in there somewhere... so I'll check it out! ta
Shaye
