Batman Goes On Forever

Batman Forever was nominated for an Academy Award in 1995. It ‘s one of a series of Batman movies which are based on DC Comics super hero, Batman.

The movie opens with an ex district attorney holding a hostage in a bank vault and Batman is preparing to go into action. He fixes a chain to the vault and attaches it to a helicopter and in true Batman style intends to fly the vault out of the bank and that's just the start. This is a only a hint of the plot and any more would certainly act as a spoiler and ruin it for anyone who hasn't seen it.

Joel Schumacher directed this one and certainly had a lot to live up to when he stepped into the shoes of Tim Burton who directed the first two Batman movies: Batman and Batman Returns. Michael Keaton, the original Batman is replaced by Val Kilmer. The cast includes such (now) famous names as Drew Barrymore and Nicole Kidman.

Batman Forever was a huge success at the box office and this can be put down to the sharp change in tone. The previous Batman movies had become somewhat dark and unappealing to the younger element but changes to design, cast and Danny Elman's musical score lifted the whole thing to make it lighter and more exciting.

Warner Brothers recognised the box office success of Batman Forever but didn't get the real success they had hoped for in exchange for their $100 million dollar budget. It did however gross over $336,531,000 worldwide.

Their next move was to make the ‘Batman' brand more attractive to children. While the critics slated the movie and the spin off products, the appeal of this movie continued and in 1997 Batman & Robin came onto the scene.
